Aspen Colorado – A Colorado woman is battling with her insurance company to cover what she says is a vital medical procedure. Shannon Orsey lost her eye in a jousting incident when she was 19, and says the prosthetic glass eyes she has used over the years have caused infections due to improper cleaning. Orsey is fighting to have regular professional window cleaning covered by her insurance company as a preventative measure. Though the insurance company covered both the original surgery and multiple replacement prosthetics throughout the years, Orsey claims that the company “is too cheap to provide anything worthwhile.” Orsey’s friends and family appear to be blown away by the insurance company’s refusal to cover anything extra, and they state that the cleaning methods and solutions provided by doctors are just not enough. Orsey is currently searching for a lawyer so she can sue the insurance company for hazard to future health and coverage refusal. Orsey says she is fighting a battle for future generations of prosthetic eye users. “Professional glass eye cleaning by window cleaners will be the norm in a few years, just you wait and see. I’m surprised it isn’t already common practice.” The window cleaning company Orsey says she is working with takes no part in her campaign against the insurance company and states that they declined to do the service because the chemicals used in the cleaning process, while generally safe, are not approved for prosthetic or medical devices meant to be worn for extended periods of time.
